Mud rooster-tails behind your wheels. Cold river water crashing over the bonnet. Ancient forest blurring past at speed. Out here in the Hanmer backcountry, the terrain doesn't ask permission โ and neither will you.
Two hours of raw, unfiltered backcountry โ the kind of ride that leaves mud in places you didn't know mud could reach
There is a particular silence that settles over the Hanmer hills โ broken only by the rumble of a 400cc engine beneath you and the splash of glacial meltwater against your boots. The Quad Bike Safari sends you deep into thirty kilometres of terrain that most visitors never see: braided river flats where stones crunch and shift under tyre, dense beech forest corridors barely wider than your handlebars, and hillside switchbacks that reveal the entire Waiau Plain stretched out below like a topographic map made real.
Your guide reads the terrain the way a sommelier reads a wine list โ choosing routes based on conditions, pointing out where the riverbed is firm and where it will swallow a wheel. Every crossing is different. Every mud patch has a story. By the time you return, coated head-to-toe in Canterbury backcountry, you'll understand why this is the highest-rated off-road experience in the South Island.
Side-by-side adrenaline with a passenger seat โ because some adventures are better shared
The buggies sit low and wide โ open-cage frames with roll bars, four-point harnesses, and tyres that look borrowed from something military. Strap in beside your co-pilot (children from age six welcome in the passenger seat) and follow your guide across the same braided rivers and forest trails as the quad bikes, but with the added satisfaction of watching someone you love get absolutely plastered in mud at close range.
These are proper side-by-side UTVs, not glorified golf carts. The suspension absorbs the worst of the riverbed and delivers the rest directly to your grin. Families love them because even younger children can join the ride. Couples love them because one of you gets to steer while the other holds on and screams.

Wear clothes you genuinely don't mind sacrificing to the mud gods. Enclosed footwear is essential โ no sandals, no exceptions. Bring a complete change of clothes (including socks and shoes) and leave them in your car. Overalls and gloves are provided, but the mud finds its way through everything. It will get messy. That's the entire point.
